The Myth of Redemptive Violence

Buckman Bridge Unitarian Universalist Christian Fellowship will meet Sunday March 23 at 9 AM in the Forrest Church Room.  The topic is “The Myth of Redemptive Violence”.  We will start with a portion of a video by Reverend H. Lamar IV of the Metropolitan African Methodist Episcopal Church of Washington DC on the Myth of Redemptive Violence in the United States, which is embedded in contemporary thought from Marvel to Gunsmoke to Startrek. He also discusses the relationship of gun culture to racism.  Then, we will watch a video with the same title that includes several renowned Biblical scholars.  We will learn their view, with a historical context, that redemptive violence, substitutionary atonement, and Jesus’s death as a sacrifice may be “bad”  theologies, even for Christians.
