The end of October and the beginning of November bring us Halloween, Samhain, Day of the Dead, and All Souls Day—holidays and holy days that herald practices of honoring those who have transcended this mortal plane or recognize the “thinning of the veil” between the living world and that of the dead. The changing seasons this time of year often herald a desire to commune with or remember those who have gone on before. On Sunday, October 30th, we will conduct a service that honors the memory of those whom we have loved and lost with an “altar of remembrance.” We will place objects and light candles, remembering the love which connects the living and the dead.

We invite you to bring photos, small mementos, writings, or objects associated with those loved ones—human or animal—in your life who have passed, to share by placing them on the altar table.

In addition to the table of photos and mementos, we will also compile a “virtual” altar of our loved ones. If you have a photo that you wish to share on our screen, please send a scan or digital image to worship@bbuuc.org, subject: virtual altar. Please include the name of the loved one shown in your photograph, their relationship to you, when they passed, and your name. You can also include a sentence or two of remembrance. All photos to be included on the screen in the service must be submitted no later than October 21st.
