Some Unitarian Universalists are unfamiliar with the work of the Unitarian Universalist Animal Ministry, an organization that’s been active since the 1980s.  As explained in their mission statement, “Unitarian Universalist Animal Ministry empowers individuals, chapters, and congregations to build justice and compassion for animals.”  The group welcomes the involvement of all interested people; members include clergy, lay leaders, congregants, spiritual seekers, as well as those less experienced or just beginning to find their way in the web of life.

The organization’s leadership consists of a Board of Directors, an Executive Director, and a Chaplain.  Projects and activities include a monthly online animal grief support group facilitated by the UUAM Chaplain, an annual sermon contest, Zoom events for members, presentations at General Assembly, education about ethical eating, and support for individual congregational chapters.

UUAM is involved in our Unitarian Universalist Association’s current efforts related to Article 2.  Working with the staff of the UU Ministry for Earth, UUAM successfully proposed an amendment to the Interdependence value, to include a covenant to protect the earth and all beings from exploitation.
