Built for Belonging

Dr. Emily Townsend-Cobb presents
“Built for Belonging”
Donna Zimmerman, Worship Leader
Gary Smart, Accompanist
First Coast Flute Choir, Guest Musicians

Join us in celebrating our new accessible doors and the Beacon youth, Board, and community members who helped make them possible. Through this celebration, we’ll explore disability justice, accessibility, and our call to widen the circle—not only by removing physical barriers, but by widening our perception of disability and embracing disability as a natural and valuable part of human diversity.

About our Speaker

Dr. Emily Townsend works with Brooks Rehabilitation as a physical therapist and clinical team lead. In 2015, Emily became one of  a handful of blind healthcare providers in the world when she completed her doctor of physical therapy (DPT) from the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus. Emily speaks on the national and international levels regarding dismantling ableism in clinical practice by promoting disability representation in lead healthcare careers. She is also the creator of Insightfully Sightless, where she shares her advocacy work and lived experience for the disabled community on social media. At home, Emily is a proud wife and mother of two energetic and curious daughters who she loves more than life. In her increasingly rare spare time, Emily enjoys distance running, arranging and writing music, and reading banned books. Emily and her husband, Ryan, joined BBUUC earlier this year, and she is so grateful to have finally found a spiritual home in this amazing community of love and family.

About Our Guest Musicians

First Coast Flute Choir members have been making sweet music together since 2014. All volunteers, with various backgrounds, players are linked by their love of the flute. In the past, the choir utilized all members of the flute family: piccolo, C flute, Alto flute in G, Bass flute, and even Contrabass flute. Their music represents many different styles, cultural heritages, and historical periods.
