Feast Day of St. Francis of Assisi, The Patron Saint of Animals

October 4 is the Feast Day of St. Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of animals.  There are many stories and legends of his interaction with animals.  One is that he preached to birds who had gathered to hear him.  Another is that he saved a wolf and townspeople from violence by persuading the wolf to stop attacking townspeople.

A lesser-known legend relates to the end of Francis’s life.  In his final month, he lost the ability to walk long distances.  In order to continue his ministry, he found it necessary to ride on a donkey.  When Francis was dying, he learned that the donkey was also dying.  He asked that the donkey be brought to his bedside.  Upon realizing that Francis was dying, the donkey began to weep.  Saint Francis blessed the donkey, who stopped weeping and passed away in peace.

To you and all the animals in your life, Happy St. Francis Day!
