Interdependence

Those of us who have reached a certain age remember the old television series, “Lassie.” In the quintessential Lassie story, the beautiful collie runs, barks, and whines to tell the family that their son Timmy has fallen down the well and needs help. The family realizes what Lassie is trying to communicate, and a courageous rescue follows.

Earlier this summer, Brandon Garrett of Oregon experienced the real-life version of Lassie’s television exploits. Garrett was driving down a remote road in rural Oregon, with his four dogs, when his truck ran off the road into a deep ravine.  Although Garrett tried to crawl out of the ravine, his injuries prevented him from getting far. He soon realized he would have to spend the night in the ravine with his dogs.

Fortunately, one of those dogs had the Lassie instinct. He ran four miles, back to the campsite where Garrett’s family was staying. The dog helped the family understand Garrett was in danger. They were able to locate him and dial 911.  Rescuers soon arrived to pull him from the ravine and transport him to the hospital. Garrett is doing well, thanks to the loyal, brave canine.

This story is an example of one of our UU values – Interdependence. We often think of companion animals as depending on us. But Garrett’s story demonstrates that all of us in the web of life rely on each other, especially when we’re in trouble.  May we all be safe. And if we fall into danger, whether physical, spiritual, or emotional, may a loyal friend bear the news to those who can help us.
