Juneteenth is the annual holiday commemorating the end of slavery in the United States. On June 19,1865, enslaved Americans in Galveston, Texas, finally received word that they were free from bondage. It is a day to reflect on the pain of the legacy of slavery, and to recommit ourselves to the work of equity, equality, and justice. This service will explore how honoring Juneteenth is part of our free and responsible search for truth and meaning as Unitarian Universalists.

About our Guest Musician:

Linda Minke has been performing on the cello in the Jacksonville area since 1993, when she moved here from Memphis, TN. In addition to cello, Linda dabbles with Celtic harp, fiddle, and various drums. She loves to teach one-on-one music lessons and has created the annual Florida Fiddle Fest in Jacksonville Beach. Her son, Victor Huls, a fine cellist, has recently earned a Doctorate in Orchestral Conducting from Northwestern University in Chicago. Originally from Michigan, Linda has come to love the climate, the beach, and the community here. She plays with the Bold City Contemporary Ensemble and substitutes frequently with the Jacksonville Symphony.
