POP (Parents of Preschoolers) is a video-based, at-home curriculum grounded in Unitarian Universalism and designed for parents and caregivers of children ages 2-5. By engaging with POP videos, parents and caregivers learn to understand their child’s spiritual development, to build rituals that support this development, and to see themselves as spiritual teachers.
As the parent of young children, you’ve experienced everything from tender hugs to tantrums and back again—sometimes in the span of a single hour. You know that life with preschoolers is intense. But why is it this way?
Last month, we learned that young children influence family culture by encouraging us to teach our values in ways they can understand. Often, this encouragement takes the form of curiosity about our beliefs and practices. At other times, it can also take the form of behaviors we find thoroughly exasperating.
At POP, we believe that while they frustrate us, behaviors like clinging, whining, tantruming and bossiness are all meant to communicate the same message: see me now. Be with me. Through their requests for increased connection, our children let us know that they see us as spiritual teachers. They make sure we know exactly WHY, WHEN, and HOW they’d be most receptive to the guidance we’ll provide.
This month’s videos and worksheets will help you see how requests for connection and teaching are showing up in your day. You’ll notice the behaviors through which your child is asking for closeness and guidance, the times of day that they’re most likely to be receptive to it, and the methods through which you’re already meeting their needs.
Feel free to engage with the prompts whenever and however you’d like. On November 1st at 8:00 pm, we’ll meet live on Zoom to talk about what we’ve learned and discovered. Can’t wait to see you then!
